He should just go up and knock on  the door. The idea repeated itself in his mind, as he stood hidden by the overgrown ivy that covered the benched trellis, his hands idly tearing apart fragile leaves in an attempt at distraction.

Even with the weekly reading lessons and the occasional quest, the awkwardness remained; an awkwardness that was his fault alone. Hawke had made every effort to remain close, the least he could do was try.

The sound of shuffling feet brought Fenris out of his thoughts as he shrank into the foliage to assess any danger. The streets, despite Hawke's attempts at clearing them out, were still not entirely safe, even in Hightown.

What he saw caused his insides to twist as a low growl emitted from his throat.

"Anders." He hissed under his breath as the mage neared.

Fenris watched with dismay as Bohdan let Anders inside the Hawke estate. Fenris immediately determined that Anders must be there to talk Ciaran into joining his futile cause once again, a mages rebellion. How vain and naive the mage was.

Hawke had always been more cordial and understanding to the mage than he would have preferred. Their shared bond of magic kept an understanding, even if Hawke disagreed with Anders methods.

Anders preferred to be the man by Ciarans side, he had eluded as much in his public attack on Fenris a few weeks before. Anders had championed Hawkes rationality as the reason that the two were no longer together, he had made light of it. Anders said that Hawke deserved better.

Fenris hated that Anders was right, Hawke did deserve better.

The words flashed again through his mind, "Leaving was the hardest thing I have ever done."

Fenris had regretted that decision made of fear every day since. He was uncertain if there was a way to fix it, but he was going to try. Anders would not stop him in this.

An unspoken fear that remained hidden behind his own contemplation, a fear greater than that of losing Hawke slowly sunk in. Had Anders succeeded in his own goals?

Staring at the door once again, Fenris fought with reason as to the time he had been lost in his own thoughts. "How long had he stood selfishly contemplating as Anders…as Anders…" The notion could not, and would not be finished.

"Move!"

A loud crash followed by pardoning words erupted from Hawkes door as Anders stalked out. His face full of rage and what Fenris recognized as pain.

He needed to know, needed to see Hawke. His mind wandered to the unimaginable as his feet moved him silently forward. Standing before the great wooden door, he hesitated. Did he truly want to know?

The door swung open a moment later. It was Hawke. Fenris had been caught standing mute at Hawkes doorstep, a situation he did not know how to explain.

The sadness that had too often plagued Ciarans strong features in recent weeks softened."Fenris?"

"Hawke I…"

Ciaran did not let him finish. Moving forward to pull Fenris into a tight embrace, Ciaran wrapped one arm around Fenris' back, pulling tight as the other hand buried itself in his hair. Soft words murmured into Fenris' neck as Hawke clung to him.

Fenris' eyes closed, relishing the memory of their one night together, his own arms returning the embrace, his fingers wrapping around the strapping of Hawkes coat unwilling to let go.

Ciaran lifted his head, resting it against Fenris' sighing deeply, "I am sorry, I was just…thinking about you."

Fenris smiled and pulled Hawke closer.

Finally removing himself from Fenris' arms, Hawke closed the open door of his estate and smiled at Fenris. "Hanged man?"

"Yes." Fenris finally managed, still reeling from the long desired contact. "I think I would like that."
